Germany

Here is a map of Germany and partly of its neighbours. If you are interested in more detailed maps of Germany and Europe, follow the links below to the picture galleries. Germany is about twice as big as Wisconsin and it has about 90 million citizens.

I was born and grew up in Kiel, the capital of the most Northern state with a border to Denmark (top arrow). Kiel is a harbour town at the entrance of the Kiel canal connecting the Baltic Sea and the Northern Sea. There are nice beaches, especially when it is not too wet or windy. Kiel is not the prettiest city since it was bombed down in WWII but it has great sailing, wind surfing, and beach volleyball  opportunites, Germany’s best handball team, and a bunch of nice people. Once a year the city turns upside down during the Kieler Woche, the world largest sailing event. Kiel was also hosting the Olympic sailing events when the Summer Games were in Munich in 1972.

My parents moved to Celle, a smaller city close to Hannover (middle arrow) that still has a very old city centre with pretty houses and a castle. In August 2003 we moved from Madison to Freiburg in the Southwest corner of Germany (bottom arrow). As you can see from the map we are living very close to France and Switzerland, which can be both reached in less than 30 minutes by car. It is located in the Black Forrest and surrounded by beautiful hills, outdoor opportunities, and well known wine areas, so there are lots of things to do in the surrounding and many wines to try. Come and visit us to check it out yourself!
