As you can see on the picture, I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate (German: beidseitige Lippen-, Kiefer-, und Gaumenspalte). It is the second most common birth defect and does not cause me any pain as such. However, it will require a few surgeries on the lip, the palate, and the alveolar ridge for cosmetic purposes and to improve eating and speech.
These surgeries will be performed until I am grown up, but those procedures and additional speech therapy should do me well. At this point, I had two major surgeries to close my lip and my palate and two minor surgeries for ear tubes. If things go well, I won’t have any further surgeries until I am 9 years old.
